One Piece

One Piece is a Japanese manga series by Eiichiro Oda, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since 1997. It follows Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates on their quest to find the legendary treasure, the “One Piece,” to make Luffy the King of the Pirates. As of July 2024, the series has 109 volumes.

The franchise includes an anime by Toei Animation (since 1999), 14 feature films, and a live-action Netflix series released in 2023. One Piece has earned praise for its story, characters, and humor. It’s the best-selling manga ever, with over 516.6 million copies sold worldwide, setting numerous records, including two Guinness World Records for the most copies published by a single author.

Manga

Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 22, 1997. Shueisha has compiled the chapters into individual tankōbon volumes, with the first volume released on December 24, 1997. As of July 4, 2024, a total of 109 volumes have been published.

In North America, the first English translation of One Piece was released by Viz Media in November 2002. Initially published in Shonen Jump, Viz began releasing the chapters in volumes starting June 30, 2003. In 2009, Viz announced plans to release five volumes per month in 2010 to catch up with the Japanese serialization. After discontinuing the print edition of Shonen Jump, Viz began releasing One Piece digitally through Weekly Shonen Jump on January 30, 2012. After Weekly Shonen Jump‘s digital cancellation in December 2018, One Piece continued its chapter releases through Viz Media’s Shonen Jump platform and Shueisha’s Manga Plus in January 2019.

In the UK, One Piece was initially published by Gollancz Manga starting in March 2006 before Viz Media took over after the release of the 14th volume. Madman Entertainment has distributed the English volumes in Australia and New Zealand since November 10, 2008. The manga has also been published by various companies around the world, including Japonica Polonica Fantastica in Poland, Glénat in France, Panini Comics in Mexico, and Planeta de Libros in Spain.

Spin-offs and Crossovers

Oda has collaborated with other manga creators, such as Akira Toriyama for a crossover between One Piece and Dragon Ball titled “Cross Epoch,” published in December 2006. In April 2011, Oda teamed up with Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro for a crossover one-shot between One Piece and Toriko called Taste of the Devil Fruit. Additionally, a spin-off series, One Piece Party, illustrated in a super-deformed art style by Ei Andō, began serialization in 2015 and concluded in February 2021.

Anime

Festival Films and Original Video Animation

The first One Piece animated adaptation, Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack!, was produced by Production I.G for the 1998 Jump Super Anime Tour. A second film, One Piece: Romance Dawn Story, was produced by Toei Animation in 2008 for the Jump Super Anime Tour, based on the first version of Romance Dawn. Toei Animation has produced numerous feature films and an original video adaptation of “Chapter 0,” a prequel to the events of Strong World.

1999 TV Series

An anime television adaptation produced by Toei Animation premiered on Fuji Television on October 20, 1999, and reached its 1,000th episode in November 2021.

Upcoming Original Net Animation
At Jump Festa ’24 in December 2023, it was announced that Wit Studio would be producing an original net animation (ONA) remake of the One Piece series for Netflix, starting from the East Blue story arc to commemorate the anime’s 25th anniversary.

Theatrical Films

Fourteen animated theatrical films based on the One Piece series have been released, typically coinciding with the Japanese school spring break. These films often feature original plots or alternate retellings of story arcs. Funimation has licensed several films for North American release.

Live-Action Series

On July 21, 2017, Weekly Shōnen Jump editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano announced a live-action adaptation of One Piece to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary. Produced by Tomorrow Studios, Netflix ordered a 10-episode first season, which was released in 2023. Eiichiro Oda served as the series’ executive producer, and the show was met with positive reception. In September 2023, Oda confirmed the show’s renewal for a second season.

Video Games

One Piece has been adapted into numerous video games across multiple platforms. These include fighting games, role-playing games, and crossover titles featuring characters from One Piece alongside other Shonen Jump franchises.

Music

The music for the One Piece anime has been composed by Kohei Tanaka and Shiro Hamaguchi. Various soundtracks, theme songs, and character songs have been released, along with compilation albums. In 2019, Sakuramen collaborated with Kohei Tanaka to compose music for the anime’s Wano Country arc.

Light Novels

Several light novels based on the One Piece films and TV series arcs have been published, starting with One Piece: Defeat The Pirate Ganzack! in 1999. Other adaptations include Clockwork Island Adventure, Curse of the Sacred Sword, and The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta.

Art and Guidebooks

Five art books and five guidebooks have been released for the One Piece series, including One Piece: Color Walk and the Grand Characters guidebooks. Viz Media released English editions of the first art book in 2005.

Other Media

Other One Piece media include a trading card game by Bandai, a drama CD featuring Nefertari Vivi, and a collaboration with Hello Kitty. A One Piece-inspired kabuki play ran in 2015 at Tokyo’s Shinbashi Enbujō, and a One Piece themed restaurant opened in 2013.

An event called “One Piece Premier Show” debuted at Universal Studios Japan in 2007 and has continued annually. Additionally, Tokyo Tower hosts the Tokyo One Piece Tower, an indoor theme park dedicated to the series.

One Piece on Ice: Episode of Alabasta, starring world champion figure skaters Shoma Uno and Marin Honda, premiered in August 2023, drawing international attention with its all-star cast.
